Yoga is a wonderful practice that serves the body, mind and spirit. And sometimes when we focus on the spiritual aspect of yoga, we forget to fuel the body. In fact, some yogis believe you shouldn’t eat before yoga, but that might not work for you and that’s okay.
Eating before yoga can help you build a sustainable yoga practice so you can reap the benefits of each and every asana. Whether you’re pressed for time or not, here are five easy and delicious breakfast ideas.
Wholegrain toast with peanut butter and banana
Because wholegrain breads contain both bran and germ, they are nutrient- and fiber-rich. When you top your toast with peanut butter and banana, you have a super easy, but well balanced breakfast to eat before yoga. Banana adds a nice boost of energy and potassium, which is a helpful nutrient when you’re working out. And the fat content within peanut butter helps to prevent sugar spikes and offers you greater satiety.
Greek yogurt parfait topped with blueberries and almonds
Anyone who practices yoga knows that it can be a total body workout. And this wholesome breakfast is a great pre-workout food, especially when you use plain Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is strained more than standard products and this produces a thick yogurt that has up to twice the amount of protein, but half the amount of carbohydrates than standard yoghurt.
And since protein can help to both grow and repair tissue, Greek yogurt is an obvious food to eat before yoga. Blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants and almonds help you build lean muscle mass without looking bulky.
Baked sweet potato fries with scrambled eggs
This savory meal is perfect to eat before yoga when you have a little extra time in the kitchen. And yes, these “fries” are actually healthy for you! Just peel and slice the sweet potato into wedges and toss them with coconut oil and pink Himalayan salt before roasting them in the oven.
They are delicious, and like bananas they’re rich in potassium, which helps to support strong and resilient muscles. Eggs are a protein-dense food to eat before yoga because they contain all nine essential amino acids. Just be sure to scramble them. They’re easier for your body to digest that way.
Smoothies are a popular meal to eat before yoga: they’re quick, easy and nutrient-dense. Blend 1- 2 cups of coconut milk, a banana and one tablespoon of almond butter together. Your body uses the fats within coconut milk as energy, and almonds and bananas help to restore and rebuild muscles after you work out.
Oatmeal with toasted walnuts and dried fruit
The fiber within oatmeal helps to prevent a carbohydrate-induced spike in blood sugar. And by pre-soaking your oats the night before, you breakdown phytic acid and make oatmeal easier for your body to digest.
Dried apricots, prunes and raisins are rich in iron, potassium and magnesium, and walnuts are anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants. All together, you have a fiber and carbohydrate rich breakfast that provides you with key nutrients to sustain you both before and after your yoga practice.
When you eat before yoga, you don’t just fuel your body. Instead, you make it easier to get the most out of your yoga practice for body, mind and spirit. Who’s hungry?
